100 Stories and We Have Only Just Begun

Entering Plitvička Lakes National Park, Croatia

On our September, 2013 trip near the entrance to Plitvička Lakes National Park, Croatia

This is my 100th post in the year plus since I started this blog.  Out of curiosity I went back over all of my previous stories to see which were the most popular.  I discovered the top five most-viewed posts dealt with some aspect of how we travel, how we budget, how we decide where to live and how we adapt to our living arrangements.

As much as I would love to think readers wish to see our pretty pictures and learn about different places in various countries, it turns out what is most popular is to learn about the process of traveling.  This realization made me think perhaps I should use fewer words discussing ‘what’ and dedicate more effort discussing ‘how.’  I will keep that in mind.

If there is one thing I have learned, it is that there are thousands, if not millions, of travel blogs.  I am a relative newcomer to the world of travel and the blog scene.  While I would dearly love to do distinguish myself in that realm, I have barely scratched the surface.  I feel fortunate to have several things in my favor.

First, The 6 Monthers concept is fairly unique.  There are other travelers who choose a variety of destinations and stay for extended lengths of time.  However, I have not discovered anyone else taking our six-months-at-a-time approach, which is why we purchased the web domain.  Our challenge now is to increase our visibility beyond the few thousand people that have heard of us.

Second, I retired a couple of years ago and I now have time to pursue with a passion both travel and writing.  With Florence’s social media and photography expertise, we leveraged our skills to earn an invitation to travel for three-and-a-half weeks in Croatia as the guests of Dhar Media and Touristar.tv to help promote tourism in their country.  That was cool!  Our ambition now is to carry our experience forward to other countries to help bolster their tourism industry while saving on expenses.  Sharing those kinds of experiences would dovetail nicely with writing more about the ‘How to’ of travel.

Finally, I want to someday point back to something meaningful to say, “I created that.”  Perhaps it will be a book.  We have published one children’s book, and we have a dozen more waiting in the wings.  We would love to score a publishing deal so we could get our books illustrated for young readers.  We would love to teach children about the people and animals and cultures from around the world.  And we would love to build our name, The 6 Monthers, which might one day be worthwhile to the next generation of travelers.

We have our work cut out for us.  Every great idea that amounted to something required perseverance, creativity, and passion, things we think we have.  We now look ahead as we pursue our journey and continue our travels down as yet unexplored roads.  As always, I hope you will accept my invitation to join us and share your thoughts along the way.

  1. I really like seeing the pictures of you and Florance in all the places I have followed you to. It helps me feel more connected to you both when I can picture who’s talking. And seeing how happy you both look as you experience the world is just an added bonus! Cheers!

Thanks, Holly. I thought, why not put up our own pictures since this post is not about any place in particular. Perhaps it was you who planted the idea in my head since I enjoy seeing pictures of you and Scott as you integrate into your new lifestyle together. – Mike

  2. I like the idea of focusing on “how to travel”. It’s like a mash-up of Rick Steves and your 6-monther thing. I think that’s cool! Still, I like the pretty pictures and learning about new places too. Just saying…

You guys look great in these photos – healthy and happy. Have a wonderful Sunday! Celeste “The Honking Vegan” – honk, honk!

I have been thinking about how I might format some of my stories differently. I will wait to see how it looks before I commit. Don’t worry, Celeste. We will still have lots of pretty pictures. 🙂

  3. I agree: it’s so nice to see both you and Florence. We often see your cute mug, Mike, but it’s nice to see your team in full. I’ve loved following along and think you have a very unique and special gig going on. I tell people about it all the time! No doubt, I live much of my travel life, vicariously through you, and enjoy every minute! Kudos and Mazel on your 100th!

Dawn, you have been a great friend both in-person and online. Thank you for your advice, support and loyalty. I look forward to sharing more exciting adventures. Also, I will make sure Florence hands the camera to a third party more often so we have a greater selection of photos of the two of us together. 🙂 – Mike

    Congratulations on your 100th post!
I’m sure there are also many people (like me) who follow your blog for the pretty pictures and the interesting information you give us about this beautiful world! But travelling information is also useful, so, any way you guys continue, I’m sure it will be interesting!

I will do my best to provide interesting and useful information (and pretty pictures) as our journey continues. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for following along. – Mike

your invitation to Croatia is like icing on the cake for you. What a fantastic opportunity!
Like everyone else, it is a delight to see Florence too – Hey girl, greetings from Louisiana, so good to ‘see’ you.
another thing, why do you have to wait till a publisher picks up your children’s books before you have them illustrated? You can get the exact illustrations you want from any artist and publishers will accept them. I think it’s a good idea because a good artist will be able to interpret your ideas for the designs. Just a thought.
    Blessings ya’ll,
    Nan

Hi Nan from both of us. We are excited about a reunion with friends and the opportunity to do some more exploring in Croatia. As for the children’s books, we were graced with the talents of an illustrator who donated his art because all the proceeds from the sale of our first book are earmarked for charity, St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. We seek a publisher because they would help finance the illustrations which can easily run $100 per page, and each book has at least 15 drawings. We cannot afford that for each book until we have sufficient distribution to cover our costs.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It is always a pleasure. – Mike

  6. Mike, I always enjoy hearing the results of other bloggers’ most successful posts. We’ve done over 400 posts, and after 2 years of blogging, we’ve pretty much given up trying to figure it out. We started our blog to document our last RTW, and because we travel quite a lot, most of our posts are about travel. But, from the beginning, we said that our blog was all about having fun. So that means that pretty much we write about whatever interests us. Consequently, our most successful post list is all over the place – some travel, some not. It constantly keeps us scratching our heads. Good luck with the blog going forward. With the skills that you each have, I’m sure you’ll achieve whatever you desire. ~James

I appreciate your perspective, James, and I will also continue to write mostly about the people and places we encounter in our travels. I am also looking at other outlets like the monthly articles I write for BoomerCafe.com and Grandparents Magazine. What I have learned this past year is that I enjoy writing as well making contact with other writers whose work I admire, which of course includes you and Terri! 🙂 – Mike
